Onyx Pyramid and use in Shadow Work

The Onyx Pyramid

Onyx is a mineral which promotes strength, protective work, and fortitude in facing challenges. It is an ideal stone to use during shadow work. Shadow work is the intentional act of understanding the subconscious motivations of our mind. This is achieved through a variety of practices such as breathing exercises, meditation, and journaling. The pyramid has traditionally represented a resting place for souls, as well as the form of a temple.

When I’m using my onyx pyramid during shadow work – I am first establishing a safe place in my mind. I visualize myself going into the pyramid and being surrounded by the onyx walls on all sides. I may envision the inside of the temple being filled with ancient oil lamps and towering statues of deities that I work with or perhaps an elaborate altar to my ancestors.

I continue to meditate on the inside of the temple for about ten minutes before I begin my shadow work. I will often couple the onyx pyramid with some mirror work. I will take a mirror and point it at myself when I am engaged in introspection. This gives me a vision of how each emotion affects me on the outside, beyond my mind’s eye. I can then take some time to reflect and sit with those emotions while cradling the onyx pyramid.

Objects with interesting textures are also a good tactile way to ground after shadow work, ritual, or spells. This is just a brief overview of the use of onyx pyramids.
