Working with the Spirit of the Cobra 06 28 2022
As part of my spell work, I have a small collection of wooden statues. Each of them has a unique personality which I use to compliment the type of energy I am working with during a magick session. I found this cobra statue while I was out adventuring one day and here are some ways I work with this tool.
I am an animist. An animist would be someone who believes in the existence of spirits in inanimate objects. I work with the spirit inside the statue to overcome my fears and biases. I do this through meditation or journaling about the experiences I am having. Once these experiences are outside of my mind, I can take the journal paper and burn it to release the fear I have about a certain idea.
Since a cobra is a reptile that must be treated with respect, it is an ideal guide for helping to keep me in the present moment. I can hold the statue, feel its textures and little imperfections and that sensation can be remarkably grounding. Anxiety and panic attacks melt away when I begin focusing on the statue and my own breathing. I may even visualize the statue alive in my hands to help me concentrate on the here and now.
The cobra statue is also good for protection & setting boundaries. I may visualize the coils of the cobra around me, shielding me from whatever is giving me issues. The cobra won’t do all the work, obviously. While I respect the spirit that lives within, I realize that physically it’s a statue. If I need to feel safe, the spells I do with the cobra give me enough time to carefully review a situation that has me feeling unrest. I can then develop a plan to physically protect myself in the mundane world from whatever it is.
These are just some of the ways I use this statue in my spell work. There are many other valid ways to work with the cobra in your work. Traditions from other cultures can be one way to gain insight on the variety of ways humanity has worked with snakes, spirits, and wooden statues.
