Sweet Potato Self-Love Spell

Potatoes have long been a staple food in the American diet. They come in a variety of flavors and have been at the forefront of nutritional controversy for the last few years. These starch-filled tubers may not be the best choice for weight loss, though in moderation, they are a fantastic medium for some interesting Magickal work. This eclectic spell was inspired by African American Conjure and incorporates elements of sympathetic Magick. The goal of this enchantment work is to help the practitioner move towards a state of self-love through the use of a poppet that represents themselves. It also helps facilitate a blessing/protection over the individual as they transition from an unhealthy self-image to a functional state of mind.

While this spell calls for a sweet potato to be used, any sort of root starch could work in place of it. I chose the sweet potato because of the “sugary” nature of this spud. The concept of “sweetening” is used in African American Rootwork in the form of honey jar spells and occasionally integrated into the creation of doll babies. The practice is used to change the mood surrounding a situation and improve it for the selected subject. In this spell, the target of our work will be ourselves. The scope of our work will be to improve our perception of our self, protect us from self-generated negative thought-forms, and also provide a blessing towards self-improvement.

Ingredients

As it goes, one day I was having a pretty lousy time with the kids, housework, and life in general. I kept feeling like no matter what I did, I was in a losing battle. Imagine Sisyphus pushing his giant boulder up a hill only to have it roll back down that slope in crushing defeat. I decided to flip on some music, give the housework a break, and get to cooking. Cooking has always been a form of meditation for myself. Working with food in this anxiety-filled moment becomes a very therapeutic act. It’s also something I can share with my kids and redirect their chaotic energies towards creativity. Here’s what you’re going to need for this spell:

Sweet Potato – Any root vegetable would do. You could use white, red, or yellow potatoes, large carrots, or even a parsnip if you enjoy eating them! Keep the skin on the tuber as this is an important part of the spell that will be explained later.

Nutmeg – Often used in love and luck spells, nutmeg imbues the practitioner with some interesting physical properties too. Nutmeg is purported to assist with mood stabilization and also help with slowing the effects of dementia in some studies.

Cinnamon – This exotic spice has been enjoyed for generations for Magickal properties related to speeding up spells, prosperity, love, and also heating up situations to the benefit of the practitioner. The practical side of cinnamon is the use of this fiery bark as a way to help stabilize blood sugar levels in diabetics, improve circulation in those with heart disease, and also as an anti-inflammatory.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil – Butter can be substituted here yet I like olive oil for both practical and Magickal uses in my cooking. Magickally, olives are a symbol of luck, love, prosperity and most importantly PEACE. We’re going for inner peace and acceptance, as well as building on the love and luck drawing properties of this oil. The practical benefits of olive oil include the benefits of lowering high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease.

Quartz Crystal Point – This is going to be used to etch your likeness into the sweet potato. I personally use my dream Amethyst point as a way of symbolically representing the manifestation of dreams from my mind into the physical world. The old saying, “As Above, So Below” is the intention here. Quartz crystals are also used for amplification of Magickal intent. You could also use rose quartz, citrine, or perhaps come up with your own choice!

Honey Honey is going to be our “sweetening” agent in this spell. Honey’s magickal properties include healing and beauty work. Considered a supreme offering to the Gods and aligned with the Sun-God Apollo, honey helps to see ourselves in a divine light of inspiration and creativity. Healthwise, honey is an antibacterial agent that has been found, perfectly preserved, in jars from ancient Kemetic times.

Oven – Any basic oven will do! Would not recommend using a microwave or a toaster oven due to the thickness of the sweet potato.

Baking Sheet – Any baking sheet lined with foil will work! I have a pizza stone that works quite nicely to bake potatoes upon.

Spell Work

Preheat your oven to 425 º . While you’re waiting, begin to etch one side of the sweet potato with your likeness with your quartz point. This is an art project! Enjoy yourself! No one is going to be grading this effort except you. Include your eyes, ears, hair, nose, mouth, and any other identifiers such as jewelry or piercings. You may have a personal sigil, you can also etch that into your potato. As your creating this “potato” self, think about the wonder of sight as you draw in the eyes, the blessing of music as you illustrate the ears, and the boon of smelling fresh spring flowers as you construct the nose. Each part of your face should be reflected upon in a practical light. You are changing your self-image as you construct the poppet!

Cut a medium-sized wedge out of the potato large enough to stuff your ingredients of cinnamon and nutmeg. As you sprinkle each herb into the potato (add as desired) ask each of the ingredients to bestow you with protection, blessings, and thoughts in a better direction. Seal your wedge by adding the honey to the inside. Now rub the outside of the potato with olive oil and envision a peaceful state of mind washing over your being. Make sure that you apply vigorous pressure to this act, as you are transferring a bit of yourself and your energy into the poppet.

Place your potato on the baking sheet inside your preheated oven and let it bake for about 45-50 minutes in the oven. As it burns, take some time for yourself. Make some offerings to your ancestors, Gods, or to your higher self. Listen to some relaxing music and take some time away from the rest of the world to clear your mind. When the potato is cooked to desired tenderness, remove it from the oven, let cool and eat it.

As you’re eating this delicious representation of self, stop and savor the moment. Feel the texture of the potato and explore the enticing combination of spices and honey that roll over your tastebuds like waves crashing together on a sunlit beach. You are standing on pure white sand and overlooking a tangerine-azure sky. Imagine that you are nourishing a better lifestyle for yourself, healthful and mindful of your thoughts and actions. As you consume the potato to competition, envision yourself with purpose. Journaling after this simple gesture can have startling effects upon the practioner.
