This is a custom piece of work for a good friend. This example ritual serves as a training tool to help out someone on their Path and can be an exercise for anyone who is planning on doing a new moon ritual. If you plan on using this work in a public setting, all I ask is that credit is given to Shining Quill of Deeply Rooted Church. If you use the structure of the ritual and make significant changes, no credit is needed. The next new moon will be in the following year, 2019, on January 5th at 6:29 PM. I’ve included a few links for even more information surrounding this mystical time for the convenience of practitioners. Please feel free to do independent research outside of what I’ve done to add your own personal essence to your workings.
This work can be done on an individual level or it can be scaled up for a group. Either is fine and does not effect the outcome of the Magickal workings.
History and thoughts on January’s new moon.
2019 is going to be a year of really powerful forces that act in the favor of those who have had a hard time in the last few years. We’ll be seeing a lot of dreams come into manifestation by those who work hardest. This coming year will be the harvest time for a lot of folks who have put time and energy into schooling, self-care, and also those who have suffered in silence. Since this new moon will be in the month of January, it will be ruled over by Saturn. This is a great time to work on career, ambitions, and other work that sets the foundation for future goals and desires. Reputation and accountability are a major focus, so meditation on the self is a must. How are you perceived by others? Are you true to your word? This is a fantastic time to work on will and self-control. It can also serve as a time to rid yourself from negative habits. Saturn can be a harsh task master, however, Saturn can be the powerhouse when the need comes for getting seemingly impossible tasks completed.
The work you do can be scaled down for mundane needs such as landing a promotion or cleaning out a garage. You can also take your work to new heights and set a strong Magickal foundation for the rest of the year. I also like tying the new moon work with the next full moon work to complete the cycle of Magick and have the most impact on whatever I am trying to accomplish. Incorporating your new moon and full moon work together builds momentum and can act as a ‘cannon ball’ effect to help launch future ambitions and dedications towards specific kinds of work. Alright, let’s get to the ritual.
1 Silver Candle – The promise of the new year’s energy
1 Black Candle – Banishing old habits that tie you down
2 Candle Holders with two dishes underneath them for herbs – The dishes used must not be ones that are used for daily consumption of food. Pick a couple up at a local thrift store. These dishes are solely spell work.
2 Tbsp Rose Petals – Self love
2 Tbsp Cinnamon – Psychic connection to one’s work, speeding up the spell work process on the silver candle.
Half Cup Vinegar – This is used as a protective force to anoint your candles.
2 Tbps Black Pepper – Drive away unwanted habits, personal demons, spiritual and mental blockages
2 Tbps Cayenne Pepper – Speed up the process of the spell work on the black candle.
1/2 Cup White Sea Salt – Used to protect, consecrate, and amplify the effects of the black candle.
1/2 Cup Pink Himalayan Salt – Used to protect, consecrate, and amplify the effects of the silver candle.
Cakes and Ale – To provide a covenant of trust, love, and respect between you and the ancestors, guides, or deities that you work with during this ritual.
Palo Santo or stick incense – This is to bless and purify your tools and also your work. I like Palo Santo because it’s long-lasting, very potent, and clears a conduit to working with Divine forces.
Offering for deity of choice – If you work with a specific deity, pick something that you know works. Alcohol and sweets are usual safe favorites of most deities. If you have a personal connection with a certain God or Goddess, use what comes to mind. Follow your intuitions. If you do not work with deities, that’s alright too. You can speak with your higher self, Guardian angels / dragons, ancestors, or any entities you feel comfortable performing Magickal work. I’ll provide a list of new moon deities below or you can do your own research to find one that would work best.
Example New Moon deities
Kali(Hindu), The Morrigan(Celtic), Hekate(Greek), Artemis(Greek), Diana(Strega), Selene(Greco-Roman), Cerridwen(Celtic), or Mani (Norse) just to name a few. For this spell, I’m going to be working with Hekate.
Petition paper, pen, and small fire-proof bowl to burn petitions – Your petitions are your written intentions. Whatever you want to accomplish, think it through and write it out. This will be your ‘contract’ with the Universe. You can anoint your petitions with your cologne or perfume. You can use blood, however, please use caution when anointing your work with your own blood. These kinds of contracts are very binding and can have some dire consequences. If you really need this work to move, then by all means, use blood with the knowledge that you will be held accountable for all that you do and say regarding this work.
Ex: Petition: “Goddess Hekate, please watch over and guide me through the new year of 2019. This year, I will be working on my health, wealth, prosperity, and also my connection to the Deeper Magick. In the physical world, I will be watching my diet and exercise, looking for a promotion or raise at my job, spending my money wisely, and also meditating on my own mental blockages so I will be a ready and willing student of higher Magick. Since I am asking for your guidance, I will bring honor to You in some way this year. I will speak of You at Pagan gatherings, writing articles about You, and generally educating others on a relationship with You. Please accept my words, offerings, and intent in this spell work. So Mote it Be!”
Ritual Pre work
First, make sure you and your ritual space are clean as possible. This means a little house work, a shower or even a Magickal bath using herbs corresponding to whatever desires you have. Make sure whatever you put in your bath water is safe for you to use. Light some candles, get into the mindset of working Magick. Try to do this at a time during the New Moon when you will not be disturbed and can completely experience the Magick ‘in the moment.’ Clear your mind of worries.
Incense / Palo Santo
Light your incense and begin blessing your ritual tools and materials. As you light the incense, speak to it and regard it as an intelligent spirit. “Please awaken, Brother Palo, Santo, element of air, and provide a clean, clear conduit to the spirit world. I ask you to assist me in removing all negativity from each of these tools, materials, and also the space around me. Cleanse and consecrate these items in the sacred name of (Hekate!)”
As you may have read before, the black candle will represent the banishment of blockages of the mind, body, and spirit. The silver candle will represent the energy of the coming year, your dreams and aspirations.
With the vinegar, pour it literally over each of your candles. With the vinegar in hand, say the following blessing, “Sister Vinegar, element of fire, please bless and consecrate these candles. I ask for banishment of the blockages of mind, body, and spirit. I ask for blessings, positive energy, and also protection for what is to come in the new year. Cleanse and consecrate these candles in the sacred name of (Hekate)!”
You can also carve symbols that represent protection and banishment into your candles. The silver candle should be adorned in words or symbols of your desires. Please also carve your name upon the candles. This can be your mundane name or your spiritual name. I personally use my chosen name of Shining Quill in all of my workings as part of my Magickal signature. This act helps distinguish my work from others when I work with Gods and ancestors.
Now that the pre work and consecrations are done, we can get to the ritual! Gather up your tools and make your way to your ritual space / altar. This ritual can be done inside or outside to honor the new moon energies and can be tailored to the liking of the practitioner.
One of the most important elements of ritual is calling quarters and creating a sacred space for you and your workings. This also enlists the help of the directions and the element of spirit and adds an additional bang for your buck. I personally chose to give offerings to each of the elements because as a Witch, I have a personal relationship with earth, air, fire, water, and spirit. They are not merely ‘ingredients’ in any spell workings I do, they are special spirits to be regarded with respect.
For this work, we’re going to be starting in the East to represent our connection to the spirit world in the time of transitions of the new moon and year.
“I call upon the great Element of Air to East, and all the Faeries, Elementals and Spirits that represent the Air. Please join me in the Circle to assist me in my Magick and Protect me From harm! I call upon You, Great Element of Air to the East!” *I usually knock on my altar ‘three times’ to awaken this energy. I also take this time to place my offerings at each elemental point in my circle.*
“I call upon the great Element of Fire to South, and all the Dragons, Elementals and Spirits that represent the Fire. Please join me in the Circle to assist me in my Magick and Protect me From harm! I call upon You, Great Element of Fire to the South!” *knock three times and provide your offering to this element and the spirits you have awoken.*
“I call upon the great Element of Water to West, and all the Mermaids, Elementals and Spirits that represent the Water. Please join me in the Circle to assist me in my Magick and Protect me From harm! I call upon You, Great Element of Water to the West!” *knock three times and provide your offering to this element and the spirits you have awoken.*
“I call upon the great Element of Earth to North, and all the Gnomes, Elementals and Spirits that represent the Earth. Please join me in the Circle to assist me in my Magick and Protect me From harm! I call upon You, Great Element of Earth to the North!” *knock three times and provide your offering to this element and the spirits you have awoken.*
“I call upon the great Element of Spirit from within to come forward, join me in the Circle and assist me in my Magick! I call upon You, Great Element of Spirit!” *knock three times and provide your offering to this element and the spirits you have awoken.* (Author’s note: I chose to call upon the element of Spirit as part of my Quarter because I have observed that this provides an awakening to my higher self and brings my true ambitions and desires to the surface more easily. This is also a way of holding myself accountable to my own work by providing my ‘magickal signature.’ )
May the Circle be open, but never broken! As above, so below. So below, as above! So Mote this be!
“I call upon the Lady Hekate of the Darkest Nights. Great Queen Hekate, please honor me with Your presence by joining me in this hallowed place on this evening of the New Moon. Tonight, Hekate, we work together to form a closer connection to You and the world beyond. I call upon the Goddess Hekate! HAIL AND WELCOME! ” *Knock three times to awaken Hekate and provide your offering to Her.*
You are now in the presence of deity, royalty, and ancient knowledge. Regard all with respect and reverence in this ritual space. If you mess up words, that’s fine. Keep workings through your fears and anxieties to accomplish the next level in your spiritual and physical development.
Place your consecrated materials together. Candles go in the candle holders on top of the plates. Your fire-proof bowl and petition are placed in the middle of the two candles. The black candle will be at your left, representing the past and the silver candle will be at your right representing the fruitful future to come.
The Black Candle
At the base of the black candle, make a clock-wise circle of white salt in the dish beneath the candle holder . You are sealing in the energies of the black candles and that which you wish to banish from your life. Envision a healing light around you and the candle, protecting you from any harm caused by your anxieties. You are in a safe place.
Now, add to the black candle dish the black pepper. Gently blow into and infuse your life-energy into the herb. Speak these words, “Wicked Sister Black Pepper, I humbly ask You to assist me in banishing the forces that keep me from living in happiness. Please banish (whatever is holding you back, this is a negative self trait, not a person) from my life this new moon night so that I may have a happy and prosperous new year.”Sprinkle the black pepper to the dish and envision yourself moving on from whatever is holding you back in life.
Now, move on to the Cayenne pepper. Gently blow into and infuse your life-energy into the herb. Speak these words, “Passionate Brother Cayenne Pepper, I humbly ask You to assist me in speeding up this work and burning away that which does not serve me on this new moon night so that I may enjoy the new year to come!” Sprinkle the Cayenne pepper on top of the black pepper and envision your fears, anxieties, and misery burning away. Imagine yourself accomplishing that which you truly desire. Think of the actions and sacrifices necessary in this world to make it happen and mentally picture it as clearly as you can.
Now light the black candle.
The Silver Candle
Place your anointed and engraved silver candle upon the candle holder and set it on this dish to the right of the lit black candle. Generously pour the pink Himalayan salt around the candle, forming a circle clock-wise around it’s base. Envision pink light sealing in the protective energies of the new year’s work. Also imagine yourself being surrounded by a bright pink, egg-shaped ball of light that radiates of love and acceptance for yourself which will bleed into your goals and ambitions.
Gently blow into and infuse your life-energy into the herb. Add to the dish your rose petals and speak these words, “Delicate Sister Rose, please encircle and infuse me with your loving energies so that I may pursue (speak your intent aloud, this could be a raise, promotion, new diet, a novel you want to write, anything that brings honor to your being) In the Holy name of Hekate, I project my will into this working!” Envision the Path before you strewn with beautiful rose petals and bright white light. Imagine yourself walking towards that which honors your highest self.
Gently blow into and infuse your life-energy into the herb. Now you can add the Cinnamon to the dish and speak these words, “Fiery Brother Cinnamon, please encircle and infuse me with connections to this next world so that I may have a deeper connection to the Magick afforded to me by the Goddess Hekate. Please burn a clear, bright Path to my goal so that I will enjoy the new year to come!” Now envision the goals in your mind becoming stronger. Picture Goddess Hekate working with you on solving whatever blockages present themselves. The hand of the Goddess Hekate sweeps away all obstructions and provides you with knowledge of the self so that the work will be permanent and long lasting.
Now light the silver candle.
Small, simple chants provide energy and psyche us into doing the most powerful Magick we’re able to do. Something like this would work well:
New moon, new year,
It’s time for the Universe to lend an ear!
Bless me with acceptance, guidance, and love,
so that I may work so below as above!
New moon, new year, it’s time to take the heed,
And provide me with every desire, ambition, and need!
Repeat the chant three times with vigor!
You will now turn your attention to the petition bowl and the petition. They should be sitting directly between the lit black and silver candles. Gently blow on the petition, adding your life force and energy to the words. Now, speak the words aloud that you have written. As you speak, envision what you are saying is going directly to the Goddess Hekate.
“Goddess Hekate, please watch over and guide me through the new year of 2019. May this energy go out into the Universe, in our Divine will, for the greatest possible outcome! So Mote it Be!”
You can also chose to add your favorite crystals to the base of the bowl for Magickal amplification. A good choice for the new moon is moonstone, quartz, or selenite. Now, take this time to quietly meditate for a few minutes on your aspirations and light the petition. Watch it burn down completely. Relight if necessary. You’ll be saving the ashes for your next ritual so that you’ll have a ‘magickal momentum’ built up for the next phase of the moon.
Cakes and Ale
Take your cakes and ale and offer a bit to the Gods, guides, guardians, or whatever ancestors you work with when you perform ritual. If you don’t work with any of these entities, chose to share this with your higher self. If you’re in a group, pass the offerings along in a clockwise motion. Envision fertility, fruitfulness and overall success to everyone involved. This new year is a time to conquer!
“Goddess Hekate, this cake represents the earth’s bounty and the fertility of the new year, reborn in our will. May you never hunger!”
“Goddess Hekate, this ale represents the fire and passion of deeds to be done. May the new moon be washed in our will. May you never thirst!”
This can be a good time for additional oaths or boasts to be spoken as the cakes and ales are passed around the Circle. If you’re alone, take time to further meditate on what is necessary to accomplish your inner longings. Offer whatever is left to nature as a sign of trust and thanks for the Magick invoked.
Now that you’ve had this cherished time with deities, ancestors, and elementals to work on your blockages and aspirations, it’s time to close the circle and let the candles burn out. Please make sure that you attend the fires at all times to avoid property damage or worse!
Thank Deity and allow Them to leave the Circle
“Thank you, Goddess Hekate, Queen of the New Moon for Your productive assistance in this ritual. Stay if You can, go if You must. Hail and Farewell!”
Starting with the North and ending with Spirit. Going counter clock-wise, thank each elemental for their protection, assistance, and presence during the ritual.
“Great Element of Earth to the North, thank You for Your presence and assistance during my ritual. The Gate to the North is now closed.”
“Great Element of Water to the West, thank You for Your presence and assistance during my ritual. The Gate to the West is now closed.”
“Great Element of Fire to the South, thank You for Your presence and assistance during my ritual. The Gate to the South is now closed.”
“Great Element of Air to the East, thank You for Your presence and assistance during my ritual. The Gate to the East is now closed.”
“Great Element of Spirit from within, thank You for Your presence and assistance during my ritual. The Gate of the Spirit world is now closed. This Circle is now open!”
Ritual After work
It’s now up to you to keep whatever oaths and promises were made to attain your goals. Remember to log your work in your Book of Shadows to record the results of this working. Whatever wax, herbs, and petition ash is left over from this ritual, be sure to store it somewhere safely in a box for the next ritual. You will be using these items to build Magickal momentum towards the full moon energies and what must be accomplished during that time. Be sure to look for signs and keep an open mind on what must be done to honor your highest self and yearnings. Blessed Be! May this be of value to someone!
